|Later on there will be more navigation stuff in this column|
Tucker and Jules in the Haw River
This site was designed using Allaire's ColdFusion.
ColdFusion is a product that can be used to generate dynamic Web pages. Most
often that means that there is some information that is stored in databases
that can be displayed (and possibly changed) through web pages. It is similar
to products like ASP (by Microsoft) and PHP (an open source product).
It is also a great tool for maintaining a consistent look and feel to a site.
In this site, the header, sidebar navigation, extra column on the right, and
the footer are consistent throughout the entire site. ColdFusion makes it possible
to use a single header file and include it with all the content pages. For me,
that means if I change the design of the header, I only have to do it once.
I don't have to edit every page on my site.
I have some design preferences. I like a clean look. I'm not a useability fanatic,
but I think that people like Jakob Nielson
raise excellent points. And while I don't adhere to everything that Nielson
says, I try to be mindful of some of his issues. I try to make navigation around
the site easy.
I think it is very important to make Web sites accessible to all internet users
regardless of disabilities. Section 508 is a big issue in government circles
right now (This was written on 11/11/00). It has become part of the American's
With Disabilities Act (ADA). Among other things, it calls on all government
agencies to make sure that their Web sites are accessible. I will be working very hard
to make this site as accessible as possible. As of 11/14/00, I haven't put very much in place.
But soon, I hope it will be a model site.
I view this site as a demonstration of the work that I'm capable of doing.
Some of the features of this Web site are really not necessary to display a
few pictures and share my writing. But it is also a part of my portfolio. I
plan on offering my services to people who want ColdFusion Web sites designed.
If you wonder if something can be done in ColdFusion, please ask
me. If I can't do it now, I can learn.
Take a look at the site I set up for Kevin Beavers. Kevin is Lisa's cousin and he happens to be a very successful composer of contemporary classical music.
12/12/00 -- I fixed the problem with the picture of the day. When I ran out of pictures at the end of the database it was going to just stop working. Now, it should recycle back to the first picture. If you don't see a picture of the day, click here

About This Site
This site is partly about sharing photos and writing with my friends and
family. But it is also a sample of web design elements that I like.
